DIY Toothpaste

So this morning I made my own toothpaste for my whole house to use!

It was super easy, cheap, and isn't half bad ;)

I found the recipe in The Big Ass Book of Crafts

-1 cup baking soda
-1 lime, zested
-20-25 drops of peppermint oil (found at Rainbow Grocery, SF)
-1 glass jar

1. Zest an organic lime. You can use a cheese grater if it has small shredders, too. Let the zest sit for at least 2 hours, I let mine sit overnight.
2. Put baking soda, zested lime, and peppermint oil into jar. Shake.
3. Wet your toothbrush and dip it into the mixture. Clean, Fresh, Healthy, Natural Teeth!

So - at first it may seem a little weird dipping a toothbrush into powder, and the taste is different. However, the only way we are going to save this planet is if we start changing our ways. We have to re-think and re-act how we do normal day to day stuff. We have gotten comfortable, and this "green movement" isn't about marketing or being stylish. Its about EVOLVING.... moving forward.... change.

Honestly, the taste might be weird at first, but I actually prefer it. There is not chemical taste, and I don't feel like my mouth is so doused in fluoride that I can touch anything to it for 30 minutes.

Benefits:
-Economically saves you lots of money. All the supplies for over 2 mixtures cost just $10. 1 mixture can last 30 days.
-Ecologically saves the environment from throwing multiple plastic tubes of toothpaste into landfill each month. NO PLASTIC INVOLVED
-Health benefits. It is all natural products, no chemicals!

Give it a shot and let me know what you all think!

Not so Lucky.

So, I went to the grocery store to get all my supplies for the soap....none of which had any plastic =)
However, Lucky's does not carry Peppermint Oil. I don't even know what peppermint oil is, and apparently neither did anyone at the store.

So I came out unsuccessful. I am going to try Whole Foods today and see if they've got it.

Plastic Day Count-

-Tofu packaged
-3 doggie poo bags
-1 biodegradable plastic (which I have skepticism)
-3 plastic bags for bulk food.

Now, here is where I struggle. I know it is better to buy in bulk, fresh, local, all that jazz. But I still have to use a plastic bag? Does anyone have any suggestions?

111 Navy Chair?!

RANT:

So today I strolled into Design with in Reach. They are having a launch party tonight for the new 111 Navy Chair, which is supposedly make from 111 recycled plastic bottles. "it is expected to keep 3 million plastic coke bottles out of landfills each year."

So, Coca-Cola is in collaboration with this project.

Walking in the store I see a bar set up, with about 20 glass bottles of Bacardi, and about 50 PLASTIC bottles of Coke.

Guess what Coca-Cola. I have an even better idea from keeping 3 million plastic coke bottles out of landfill.....STOP MAKING PLASTIC BOTTLES!!!!!!!!!

When I mentioned the irony to the lady working there, she just said that coke sent them all those bottles, then got very uncomfortable and walked away.

I drank a coke today, however, it was in a glass bottle!

But after this....I think I am officially boycotting Coca Cola!

Making it Interesting.

So...to make things fun and interesting I am making a vow now to...

Give up One item of plastic each week,

and have One project a week.

This Week:

Giving up - bread in plastic bags. I am going to buy fresh bread from the farmers market or from paper bag in store. Its much fresher and tastes better!

Project - Make my own special toothpaste!

Follow me tonight for my step by step process!
So, the first day I only recorded the actual plastic that I used and disposed of. The more the thought of plastic was in my mind, the more I realized I really USE on a daily basis

-toothbrush
-toothpaste
-shampoo
-conditioner
-broom
-dustpan
-coffee cup (made from recycled materials)
-plant potter
-credit cards
-backpack
-bike bell
-dog food bag (coated with plastic)
-computer cord
-printer
-mouse
-hand sanitizer
-chap stick
-lotion
-Sugar Jar
-bread bag

Plastic Use and Dispose Count:
3 -doggie poo bags
1 -Bag of chips
1 -Fiber Bar
1 -Bag of peanuts
1 -Handful of cranberries in plastic bag
1 -sticker on avacado

I was riding my bike yesterday, and SLAP a plastic bag comes flying at me and gets caught in my spokes. I bend down to get it out, and 3 times I pulled it off and it went right back in there. Was that a sign? Telling me there is no avoiding plastic? Or maybe just a symbol for how I am going to have to try multiple times and different ways and push myself to really make this possible.

I recently stumbled upon

Life Less Plastic
and
Fake Plastic Fish

Here are two very motivational women who have made great strides in living a life with less plastic. I look forward to learning from them.

More-onic Mondays.

Monday, May 17, 2010. Day One.

My Plastic Salad:

I bought a salad at Trader Joe's today, and realized the ratio of plastic to food....was more plastic then food.

3 Plastic doggie poo bags
1 Coffee lid
1 bag of Banana Chips
1 bag of Cashews
1 Plastic fork
1 plastic wrapper
1 plastic salad box
1 indiviual bag of croutons
1 container of dressing
1 individual bag of parmesan cheese
1 Soy Chorizo wrapper

13 Items of plastic in just an average day.

My goal, my ambition is to eventually use no plastic. I figured the only way I was going to be able to change my ways, is to throw it in my face everyday.

Oh...nice, just found my puppy Willow chewing on plastic bottle. She will have the hardest time giving up plastic, its her favorite!

Pointing the figure at ME.

I AM your average 21 year old fashionista, living in San Francisco, CA. San Francisco is well on its way at being a leader in this "Green" movement. Our city has ban the use of plastic bags, all business and households are required to have a compost, recycle, and landfill bin, and even our Mayor rode his bike on bike to work day.

The idea of being sustainable and green is constantly surrounding me in this city. So, I do my fair share. I compost and recycle, I use my bike and my main source of transportation, I bring my reusable coffee cup to the cafes (usually), and I sure blab my mouth a lot about the state of our planet. However, my actions are never as loud as my words. I find I preach more then I do.

These past few months, weeks, and days I having been surrounding myself with as much inspiration as possible. Movies, photography, activists, organizations, events, etc.

I have been kicking myself trying to figure out what I can do that is brilliant and creative to change the world. I find that everyday I tell myself, WE are not doing enough. WE as a society. This past weekend was Bay to Breakers, a 99 year old tradition of a run from the Bay to Ocean Beach. The tradition has become another excuse for San Franciscans to dress up and get wasted. I thought it was going to be fun, I love to dress up, however, walking down the the Panhandle (just 3 blocks from my house) I come to find the whole city is completely trashed and half naked. Now, I have no problem with nudity, and I was drinking too, so that wasn't my issue, it was all the WASTE we were creating. I was shocked.

Here is this huge event where people from all over the Bay Area get together as a community, and what do we do? Get drunk and throw our trash all over our lovely parks and streets. That moment, right there was the final straw, the final 6-pack O Ring I was going to pick up and cut so a turtle has less a chance of getting stuck or choking on it.

I was so confused as to why we can't get together like that and do something better for our environment and community. I mean heck, lets all get together and have a clean up the city day. We can still all dress in costumes, and sure we can still drink. But why to the extent of passing out at 10 am?

SO HERE IT IS:

This whole time I was saying WE need to do something to change, but never once did I say "I NEED TO CHANGE". I never pointed the finger at myself. I need to start with myself, change my ways, before I can help others change theirs.

Plastic to me is the biggest issue right now.
85,000,000 plastic bottles are thrown away every day in the US
500 Billion plastic bags thrown away annually.
Plastic rarely gets properly recycled. It takes to much energy and too high of costs, so it ends up just getting thrown into the landfill, which ends up in the ocean.
Plastic can never be fully broken down back into earth, instead, it is just broken down into a million little pieces that floods our oceans, which is ingested by millions of sea creatures, and we then in return, eat those fish.

The only way I know how to stop myself from using unnecessary plastic is to throw it in my face.
Write down every piece of plastic I use and throw away, with the potential of using less and less each week, till I am using next to none.

It is going to be a long process, and a struggle. But with motivation, inspiration, and support, I can do it.
